Always give your BEST - Master Coach Barbara Hofmeister

Today I booked a sailing trip.

I love sailing – the noise of passing through the water, the clicks of the rigging, being forced to work with nature… All of that really turns me on but today’s sailing trip was a real let down.

First of all the trip was comparitively expensive so expectations were high. The boat arrived late. It run under German flag with a German captain so no excuse here except that he did not care enough to make sure he was on time.

Then the ship was in a dreadful state, not well kept at all. The captain immediately commanded me to take the steering wheel and steer us out of the harbour. Obviously he did not know that I don’t take too kindly to commands 🙂

Next he did not want to set the sail – Hey, we booked a sailing trip – not a tuck-tuck trip on a falling apart boat with a lazy captain.

Even though I am living the Wizard way “It is as it is”, I think my look showed him that there was a fierce Warrior hidden behind the smile and half heartedly he hissed the front sail (sorry don’t know the correct word for it) but then he let the Korean guests take the wheel and as he never explained to them what to look out for we “sailed” with the motor without any direction. Going out for 45 Minutes, a short stop for swimming and  back to port.

This was the worst excursion I have been on and it was way overpriced which tickled me doubly. I hate to waste money.

Anyway, what is the lesson in this story?

  1. Don’t ask people to pay for a service you don’t enjoy giving.
  2. Take whatever you do seriously and do the best job possible.
  3. Make sure you keep your things in good order because how you do one thing is how you do everything. This goes for your actions as much as for your inactions.
