Why is Life Coaching so effective?

I am being asked all the time what makes Life Coaching so successful. My answer is: It’s efficiency.

But why is it so efficient? Because it is action based and forward oriented while most other self development tools look at the past and try to find out why we are who we are today.

Obviously past behavior may be a good predictor of future behavior, but it’s never more than a tendency because we can change that. The past is over and the future is unknown. But our past does not equal our future. It will only affect it to the degree WE ALLOW it. This is what makes us humans so unique.

Evidently the past DOES matter, but only to the extent we let it. It matters because we can (and we should) reflect on it and learn from it. But it does not have to rule the rest of our lives.

You can change tomorrow by what you do today. What you think, what you believe and the actions you take or don’t take will affect your future. But change is not so easy and this is where coaching can help significantly.

A coach sees the coachee from a different, an outside perspective. Because of this detachment s/he can ask the right questions so the coachees are able to find new and better answers for themselves. Coaching is not so much about giving advice. It is more about helping the client find their own solutions before building an action plan together. Coachees are then supported while executing this plan.

You may not be able to control ALL the events in your life, but you can drastically increase your odds of success by using a coach whenever you are on a crossroad of your life.

Why you need a Mentor – Walk your Talk

My mentor reminded me of something this week…

People think once you are successful you don’t need a mentor or a coach but exactly the opposite is the case. You want me to walk my talk, don’t you? Why would you use me as a coach or a mentor if I don’t use one or as it is more than one? Because I am already there? No, remember the journey is the destination and there is always room for improvement. I could not be a personal growth coach if I would not strive to grow myself every single day. At the moment I have 2 mentors and 2 coaches in different areas of my life. You can do the same or take an older one like me (blush) that has experience in many areas.

And let’s talk about another misconception and that is fear is weakness. This is a big myth! Most people think that admitting their fear somehow makes them weak or unsuccessful. On this I agree with my mentor …. this is total baloney.

Here’s his advice on this one:

“I feel fear regularly…especially when I’m in the midst of creating a lot of cool, new stuff. When you step outside of the norms in business and life, expect some fear. Just don’t let it stop you. The best thing to do is to gently call yourself out on it and more importantly, call a friend or your coach.

The secret is to share your fear from a neutral place instead of feaking out and believing your fearful thoughts.

A philosophy that serves me well is the idea that every “failure” offers an opportunity to learn and grow. In fact, the Chinese symbol for “crisis” also represents “opportunity”, isn’t that interesting?

When something goes wrong or doesn’t unfold according to plan, rather than view it as a failure and get caught up in feeling bad or sorry for yourself, look for the lesson and take action acordingly.

Here’s what I mean…

Rather than continue to moan and groan and feel frustrated with the negative reaction re-focus on your goals and dreams and use your learning to do it better next time. Because there will be a next time, won’t there? And for those you need someone by your side that has been there and done it.

What are you worth?

Today I want to share with you a post I read on Lisa Sasevich’s blog. I think Lisa hit the nail on the head with it as most coaches I meet – and that included me for a very long time – do not dare to charge anywhere near enough for them to live a decent lifestyle from their coaching efforts. Very few make a good living and only a handfull make a fortune.

What is the difference? The difference is their mindset about the value of their work.

Let me give you an example:

What is the value of the coaching session I gave to a fellow coach who had just been left by her future husband? She was so devastated and not able to take care of her children and her life, let alone her clients. For 45 Minutes she kept telling me her version of what happened and how she hopes to fix it. No matter what I said, nothing got through to her until I told her that I will end the session so she can continue to wallow in her sorrow for a little while longer.  That got her attention and I was able to take her through some processes that totally changed her perception of the situation.

From that one coaching session her life turned around. She started a social life, became pro-active with here children as well as in her business and within days told me that I had done wonders. Obviously she had done the wonders herself but that one session got her on the path she could not see by herself.

Another example:

In a business seminar I attended in London I was paired up with a young man who owes a garage for high end luxury cars. We had to do write our elevator pitch and when he delivered his I was surprised there was nothing about him in the pitch at all so I gave him some coaching. It only took a few minutes but as he changed his approach I could see the sparkle turn on in his eyes and the pride return to his shoulders. I met him again a few months later in another event and he told me that those few minutes really changed his life. Because he sees himself in a different light now, he started doing things differently and is well on his way to financial freedom.

What are those results worth?

Obviously you do not always get the break through in 5 minutes or in one single session but you do get it as long as you have a good coach and you are open and willing to work with them.

As my preliminary turned out longer than intented I will post Lisa’s post tomorrow so we will continue on this topic. If you feel stuck, unhappy, unsatisfied… do consider getting yourself a coach and remember, you always get out of it what you put into it – be it money, time, attention and intention. Do not haggle with yourself or your coach. Be open.  The advice you get can be… priceless.

Are you accountable?

One of the reasonswhy people do not reach their goals…

is that they are not accountable to anyone (in many cases not even to themselves!). Did you know that we work 7 to 9 times better when we have someone that we are accountable to? We seem to rise up to the occasion and get that little extra out of ourselves.

The easiest way to illustration that is in with our exercise routine. How often have you wanted to start a daily exercise routine but got distracted or were too lazy and found a good reason (or better said excuse) not to do it today because… But when you exercise with a friend, a colleague or a neighbor, you will pull yourself out of bed and put on your sneekers to meet your partner and do it anyway.

If you want to reach your goal, get your self someone whom you can be accountable to. Make sure that the person you pick has their own goals and is as committed as you to reach them. They should be  supportive of your ideas and goals. Let them know that you wish them to be strict with you whenever you try to stray. That is why coaching works so well. You pay them to keep you on track. That way you have something at stake that you don’t want to lose.

A good accountability partner is invaluable to your success and if both of you have similar goals in mind it works even better.

How life can change fast

“You will never change your life until you change something you do daily.” – Mike Murdock 

 As you are reading this I know you are willing and ready to change some things in your life but as we all know – alone – it is difficult. That is why life coaching is so extremely successful.

When I first had a life coach – and yes, I still have one – I started just for fun to see how it worked. I wanted to know what the buzz was all about and Oh boy did I realise what a great help a coach can be.

You see to change our habits and the believes we have grown up with takes more than just an idea, a self-help book or good intentions. It takes true commitment and continuous reminders of that commitment. That is why AA and Weight Watchers work. They are asking people to make, sometimes drastic changes in their drinking or eating habits and support them in their weekly meeting.

Life coaching is similar. Your coach is your partner in the change process. She/he will support you, remind you, prod you and mastermind with you each step of the way. They will help you get unstuck and keep you moving forward.

Sometimes it takes only a few coaching sessions and you have overcome whatever obstacle was in your way and can now continue by yourself – you are unstuck! Other times you might make it a longer relationship because there is more than one area in your life that you want to change; that you want to improve on. You decide! After all it is your life, isn’t it?

It is an undebatable fact that life coaching works extremely well as long as you have the right coach. I suggest to try a couple before you start. Most of us offer a free introductory session.
