How to make New Year Resolutions work

Following is an article from my friend Richard Tan, CEO of Success Resources which echos my sentiments about New Year Resolutions and reaching your goals and dreams:

On the 1st day of  the year, I received the following emails about starting the New Year right. As usual, these were some of the tips offered:

1. Drink less alcohol
2. Eat healthier food
3. Lose weight
4. Get fit
5. Take a trip
6. Volunteer to help others
7. Save more money

There were all kinds of advice that arrived in my inbox covering nearly every topic you can think of. There’s even one that tells you how to backup your hard drive!

The truth is, New Year resolutions tend to get a bad rap for being fruitless. Just ask any of your friends, and they’ll probably tell you that hardly any one of them has fulfilled his or her resolution. It seems like they never stepped out of their old selves, living with stale, self-limiting habits that are stopping them from getting the success they deserve.

Their advice?

Forget about New Year resolutions!

I disagree!

My thought is that since you’re going to break your resolutions like everyone else, just TAKE ACTION anyway! You see, the act of trying HAS value. Even if lasts only a month, a week, an hour…Or even if you’ve only accomplished 10% of your resolutions, at least you made an attempt. It’s better than sitting helplessly on your beanbag chair, giving in to others who want YOU to fail.

Before you start rummaging through your archive of long-forgotten resolutions, remember this: the goals aren’t as important as the process.

As the great poet Ralph Waldo Emerson so wisely puts it: “Life is a journey, not a destination”. It is never too late to start anew to be what you could have been. Life is not just about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself, every day. So get into the habit of persisting with your commitment to change and take action to get your goals. Even if it’s only a small change, you are still taking that all important step closer towards becoming the bigger, better person you are meant to be.

And if your target is nothing, that’s precisely what you’ll get!

So take action now!

What is Life Coaching?

In the last few years Life Coaching has become more and more popular but as it is a new profession most people don’t know enough about it to decide whether it is right for them. We hope this article will clarify what coaching is so you can make an educated decision for yourself.

We have all heard of sports coaches. In the old days they were the sports “trainers” but today all high performance sport stars have a mind coach; a person who strengthens their belief in themselves and in their ability to win. Even though Life coaching is not primarily about winning or losing, it is about “winning” the life you choose to live.

Life coaching has become so popular because many of us are tired of doing what we thing we “should” do. We have become aware that we have a choice to do what we want to do!

Be aware that coaching is not a therapy. In therapy the goal is to give you an understanding of your past in order for you to have the awareness of how you became who you are today. Coaching is movement oriented and action based. Where therapy looks back, life coaching looks forward – towards your future and a “better”, more fulfilled YOU.

Your Coach will assist you to identify specific goals and objectives and will help you to stay focused so you can reach those goals faster. A good coach will provide you with the tools, structure and perspective to make the journey easier for you and she/he will make you accountable.

Did you know that people who are accountable are 7 to 10 times more successful than others?

Coaching works in all aspects of your life from relationships, to lifestyle, to career, health and wealth improvements. It focuses on strengthening your skills and improving and trusting your abilities. It helps you to meet and exceed your potential in order to be your best.

Coaching is similar to consulting. Yet, where consulting frequently provides only temporary solutions, coaching is consistent and on going. The Coach stays with the clients to help implement new habits, skills, and changes. Another distinction is that consultants usually give advice and tell people what to do while coaches focus on assisting their clients to discover the solutions themselves. Or in other words, we don’t give you the fish; we teach you how to fish.

We focus on what you want to achieve and help you maintain your commitment to yourself and your dreams and visions. We look at where you are now in relation to where you want to be. Are your ideas and goals based on your true core values? What are your strength and weaknesses and how can we use this knowledge to your advantage?

Our society is looking for a deeper meaning as we begin to understand that we  grow from the inside out. More and more people are freeing their time and resources to invest in themselves because they realize how simple it can be to accomplish something big if you “get a little help from a friend”.

So why not use a trusted friend? As wonderful as it is to have good friends, they are emotionally involved and do not have the objectivity and distance necessary to see where you stand and what type of assistance you need. Have your friends or family ever been shocked because you made a move in a new direction? Have they ever told you that something can’t be done or is not done the way you want to do it? Quite frequently our well meaning friends and family are the “dream stealers” not the supporters we need. Because of the emotional distance a coach is a trusted professional who works with you on improving the most important aspects of your life.

Why would you want a Coach?
You might want a coach because…

  1. you want to grow
  2. you want to be more productive
  3. you want to become more balanced
  4. you want to find new and more efficient ways to do things
  5. you want to make a mark
  6. you want to define and live a life of purpose
  7. you want new perspectives
  8. you want to change certain aspects of your life
  9. you want to reach new goals
  10. YOU WANT MORE!

How long do you have to commit to your coach?

It is not so much a commitment to your coach as a commitment to yourself. Give yourself time; 3-6 months at least. What has taken you a lifetime to become cannot be changed in a day. However sometimes even one single session can make a life changing difference.

If you need help on a specific short term project, you should consider one-on-one coaching to help you accomplish this specific goal faster.  If you need motivation and a step by step process to move you out of feeling stuck and unfulfilled, do group coaching.

Why does life coaching work?

  1. The synergy created between you and your coach creates momentum.
  2. Better and clearly defined goals support you to move towards your “dream life” faster and with less effort.
  3. You develop new skills and habits which translate into higher success and a more balanced life.

There is never a better day than today to start your “new” life. Sign in for your Membership at www.yoursuccesscycle.com

Prioritize for your Time Management

Integrating new and better habits can be very difficult because we are all much too busy. Time seems to be racing and there is always so much to do – so much still unfinished. No time really to concentrate on what we want or need to change.

The only way we can get on top of that is by prioritizing. Some things are more important than others. Some are more urgent than others. Doing the “balancing act” in your everyday life requires careful and thoughtful planning of how to spend your time and energy if you don’t want to burn yourself out.

Let’s look at what priorities are:

1. Our priorities are based on what we value (achievement, integrity, intimacy, personal satisfaction, independence, etc.) and what our goals are (establishing/maintaining a career, raising a family, finding/maintaining a committed relationship or friendship, etc.)

2. Because each of us is a unique individual with our own values and goals, it is normal that our priorities will be somewhat different from those of other people around us. And they may conflict with the priorities of those close to us. For that reason it is very important to understand what our own priorities are before we decide to adjust them to those around us.

3. As our life changes, so do our priorities. The important thing is to stay aware what our priorities are at all times because it is so easy to get lost in “busy work” instead of spending our days doing what really needs to get done. You are the one who decides when and why activity X is more important than activity Z.

Always remember, you are the ultimate decision-maker in your life. Even when you compromise, you make a decision – the decision to compromise.

To be or not to be – the Choice is truly Yours!

Find a strong reason WHY

Frequently people find it easier to come up with excuses (they call them reasons) for not doing things they know must be done than with ideas on how best to do them.

Could you one of those?

Jim Rohn said: “When your WHY is strong enough the how becomes easy.”

This means when your reasons why you need to do something are bigger than your excuses, you will make progress toward your goals. Logical, isn’t it?

It also means you have to come up with the reasons why you really should accomplish something before there is time to come up with the excuses that will for sure hold you back.  Works best if you read this twice!

You see, your subconscious is much more powerful than your conscious logical mind and it will work on achieving whatever you give it to work on. In most cases we give it doubt, fear, scarcity, and other negative thoughts.  What do people who lack money most often think about? Money. But not in an empowering way, caring and sharing way.  They think of their lack of it, sometimes look at others who have more with envy, are frustrated because life is not as “it should be” etc.

If you give yourself great positive reasons why you want to achieve a specific goal, your subconscious will immediately take you at your word and begin working toward that goal. And it will keep working on that goal until instructed to do otherwise (and “otherwise” means until those negative excuses sneak back into your thinking).

That is why you need to feed your subconscious with great care because no matter what you feed your mind on it works incessantly on getting you the results it believes you want. The challenge is that those are also the thoughts you planted into it. For instance, when you watched a violent film on TV, or read about a disaster in the newspaper or watch a mindless cheating show. But those are not the results you want, are they? Or are they?

Take a minute, right now, and write down what it is you really want.

…………………………………………………………………………………………….

Write down all the reasons why you should have it and how it would benefit you and others

……………………………………………………………………………………………

If you go through these steps you imprint your positive thoughts on your subconscious mind. And please don’t write out your excuses, they will come up by themselves more often than is good for you. Just focus on your positive reasons why and write those down to internalize them into your subconscious.

And then – Take action RIGHT NOW.

Take one first small step and experience how good it feels to move forward, to move towards your goal, without worrying about excuses or other roadblocks.

Did you take your first action? GREAT – you got your first result.

If you didn’t – why not?
I will leave some space here so you can fill in your excuses…

Move in the right direction! As always, the choice is yours!

Wishing you a fantastic WHY

K.I.S.S – Goals by Zig Ziglar

K.I.S.S.  – When I started my sales career, one of the first things we were taught was to “Keep It Simple, Salesman.” Communicate in such a way that your message is unmistakably clear. If the message is not clear, the prospect ends up confused and confused people seldom take action.

This advice can be followed in any field of endeavor. For example, in marathon running today we utilize sports psychologists, computerized training regimens, and running shoes that are “state-of-the-art.” Perhaps all of that is necessary if you want to win the big race. I’m not denying that these things help, but Toshihiko Seko didn’t need them to win the Boston Marathon.

I was tremendously impressed a dozen years ago when Toshihiko Seko won the Boston Marathon. His training program was simplicity itself and Toshihiko explained it with twelve words: “I run ten kilometers in the morning and twenty in the evening.” At this point you probably think, “There’s a catch!” But this plan enabled him to outrun the world’s greatest, fastest, most gifted runners. When Seko was told that his plan seemed too simple when compared to that of other marathoners, he replied, “The plan is simple, but I do it every single day, 365 days a year.”

It is my conviction that most people fail to reach their goals not because their plans are too simple or too complicated. Most people don’t reach their goals because they’re not committed and willing to follow their own plans.

Many of our goals do not require detailed plans, but all of them require that we must follow the plan we have. Seko’s plan was effective because he followed it every day. You can’t get more simple than that! Follow Seko’s example, make certain your plan to reach your goal is simple, then follow it carefully. Be accountable to yourself and I’ll SEE YOU AT THE TOP!

Do you want more Success?

Everyone has at least One but many (if not most) never go for their dream. They are not really committed to achieving their dream and have given up.

Some will start on the path to achieving their dream, but get discouraged by the lack of support from their  friends, family, teammates, colleagues etc. because they tell them, their dream is crazy, impossible to reach, or just not for them. Consequently they abandon their dreams and settle for mediocrity

Others actually begin the journey only to have distractions get in their way…. and they too give up.

All these people are willing to settle for “good enough,” however good enough never is. There will always be that nagging doubt in your mind asking you “What if…?” There has to be more to this life than just good enough!

And then there are the dreamers

who are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve their dreams.

Having dreams is important:

  • Without them you will not strive to get anywhere!
  • They provide you with the passion you need to reach your goals
  • They give you hope and direction
  • They help you be disciplined

Discipline is important if we want to achieve more in life. Discipline means doing the right things at the right time and for the right reasons. Sounds easy but we all know it isn’t always that easy. What is easy, is to get distracted and lose precious time and focus. That is why we need to be accountable – for our action and our in-actions. One of the most powerful success concepts is the Mastermind Principle which the famous author Napoleon Hill in the all time classic “Think and Grow Rich” dedicated a whole chapter too. For good reason.

Let me just recap the essentials:

The “Master Mind” may be defined as “coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose. No two minds ever come together without, thereby, creating a third, invisible, intangible force which may be likened to a third mind.” – Napoleon Hill

It has been scientifically proven that by joining or creating a Mastermind group you are 8 times more likely to succeed!

8 times more!!!

Why? Because you will be accountable to your mastermind partners and of course, to yourself.  By helping and supporting each other, each member achieves more! It’s an amazing concept and proven to work. There are thousands of examples in history and around today’s Top Achievers. Nobody achieves extreme success by her or himself.

Who belongs to your Mastermind group?

Who are you accountable to?

Who supports you?

Join me and other like minded individuals on our journey to truly live our dreams!

Remember what Nike says: “Just do it!” And do it NOW.

Be blessed

Barbara

On Advertising Your Goals

Experts on the art and science of goal setting seem to be of two minds when it comes to whether or not you should tell others what those goals are.

Some will advise you to put your goals up on a billboard for the world to see, as a way of holding yourself accountable and attracting necessary help and resources into your circle.

Others will tell you that dreams are fragile, and sharing them with others runs the risk of nay-saying dream-stealers killing your dreams while still in the cradle.

Here’s my take: keep your really big goals – the ones that could change the world, or at least your corner of the world, to yourself.

By definition, really big dreams are not realistic (nor should they be), so don’t run the risk of allowing the ridicule of tiny-dreamers to diminish your enthusiasm for your big dreams. On the other hand, I think it’s a good idea to share your interim goals with an appropriate circle of friends and supporters.

The Power of Concentration

Do you ever get distracted?

Do you ever mean to do one thing and then find yourself doing another?

Do you ever lack concentration?

If you can say no to any of the above – CONGRATULATIONS! You are fairly unique.

There are not many people out there who are truly able to fully concentrate for any length of time. Research shows it is only between 1-3 % of the population. Could that be the 1-3 % of the population who truly make it in life?

Would you agree that it would be of the greatest value if we learned how to concentrate? The amount of focus you have on your important tasks determine your success. To make a true success of anything you must be able to concentrate your entire thought upon the idea you are working on. The person that is able to concentrate utilizes all constructive thoughts and shuts out all destructive ones. The greatest man would accomplish nothing if he lacked concentration and got distracted from his main objectives.

Yet we all know that in order to accomplish a certain task we must concentrate on it. So it is of the utmost value to learn how to concentrate especially when working on a new idea or a new business. As soon as we are laser focused we will move forward but if we are wishy washy and half hearted nothing will happen except frustration because so much valuable time has passed without seeing results.

Let me repeat: To make a success of anything you must be able to concentrate your entire thought upon the idea you are working out. Do not become discouraged, if you are unable to hold your thought on the subject very long at first. There are very few that can. It seems a peculiar fact that it is easier to concentrate on something that is no good for us, than on something that is beneficial.

This tendency is overcome when we learn to concentrate consciously. If you will just practice a few concentration exercises each day you will soon develop this wonderful power. Success is assured when you are able to concentrate for you are then able to utilize for your good all constructive thoughts and shut out all the destructive ones.

Have you ever made a decision to do something – could be in your work, hobby or family life and then set out to do it with the unwavering belief that it will happen? You probably have but in case you do not remember let me give you an example. When I started the Achievers Toastmasters Club I was laser focused because I really wanted a Club that stood for all the positive things Toastmasters offers. The first Club I had belonged to had turned bitchy and unpleasant and I did not want to be part of it anymore.

After making the decision to start a new Club I did not take No for an answer anymore. My only thoughts were on how to get the right people to join and I did everything in my power to achieve that.

The club that still lives my vision today

The club that still lives my vision today

Within 6 weeks we were chartered and should you ever come to the Costa del Sol, you must visit The Achievers TMC because it really stands for the positive, learning environment Toastmasters International propagates. The Club is now more than 7 years old and even though our members change (and I left the country) the vision I had of the Club has not changed and it can be felt at each meeting.

It is of the greatest value to be able to think only that which will be beneficial; that which you really want and not how to avoid what you don’t want. Did you ever stop to think what an important part your thoughts, concentrated thoughts, play in your life? We are wonderful creatures, but we must continue to train and develop to reach our goals. Anything can be accomplished by every man if he can be awakened to do his very best.

That is why Anthony Robbins talks about “Awaken the Giant within” but the greatest man would not accomplish much if he lacked concentration and effort. If you study success you will know that people with very bad grades in school have achieved incredible things. You will have read the stories of the timid young man who became a powerful entrepreneur even though outside his field he is still shy. Dwarfs can do the work of giants when they are transformed by the magic power of great mental concentration. But even giants could only do the work of dwarfs when they lack this power.

We accomplish more by concentration than by knowledge; the man that is apparently best suited for a pposition does not always fill it best. It is the man that concentrates on its every possibility that makes an art of both his work and his life. As in all other good things in life your real advancement will come from your individual effort.

Therefore make a plan each day of the most important tasks that will get you where you want to go – set clear priorites. Make this time a time in which you will not be disturbed by phone calls, meetings, children, spouses or your favorite telenovela. This time is only for you and your goals. Depending on how good your power of concentration already is start with a minimum of 30 minutes and work yourself up bit by bit. Find out what your best time of day is to concentrate.

For me it is first thing in the morning, for one of my best friends it is in the late evening. Use that time to move you forward – towards your dreams and goals.

Today is your day! Use it wisely

Don’t forget to get started

Too many of us never get started because we keep waiting for the perfect moment.

I used to be a so called “perfectionist” – someone who always wanted to make things perfect before showing them to anybody. That way I had plenty of excuses to never really get started and consequently nothing much happened in form of results even though I worked sooo hard. You can not be any more stupid than that, I promise you!

Because of that I had little personal growth, struggled along and was not too successful in my early business adventures.

Even thou I had a lot of ideas, I never really moved into true action. That way I couldn’t fail but I also could not learn much. For quite a while I did not understand that I was not moving forward.

Since I’ve realized and accepted that my perfection was holding me back my whole life has changed.

Let me give you a tip if you desire more freedom and momentum in your life.

Make your goals smaller.

Do not look at Mount Everest from the valley or do not always focus on the big goals only. Better to focus on each phase of your goal and then celebrate each small victory. Take it step by step.

Nobody was on the top overnight even though some of the Internet success stories might suggest that. Any great athlete be it Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, or Michael Schumacher will tell you that big success comes through a lot of small wins added up.

But you need to get the engine started in life.

Take one new action today even if it seems tough to do, but you know you need
to do it. And take another new action tomorrow. Step by step will truly get you the desired results.

To your success

Define what you really want clearly

New Year is coming up when we usually make New Year resolutions. Naturally we all want to succeed but the majority doesn’t know how to clearly define success.

We have talked about this before. If you don’t really know what you want you are highly unlikely to get it. You need to have real clarity about your intentions … what it is you really, really want to experience in your life.

Most people desire to be rich. What does rich mean to you and why do you want wealth?

Years ago I saw a beggar in the streets of Sri Lanka and I could see from his eyes and his smile that he was rich – not rich in worldly goods but rich in true happiness and contentment. What type of wealth, what type of riches do you want and most importantly WHY? Apart from the obvious THINGS like dream holidays, a nice house or a new car but that is just a small part of wealth, isn’t it?

Why do you want wealth?

Do you want wealth in order to have lots of money in the bank or do you want it for the joy and freedom it gives you; for the experiences you can have because you are wealthy and don’t have to worry about tomorrow’s food or roof over your head? Give this a moment of thought.

Why do you really want wealth?

If people have everything they want, it is because they were very clear about what they wanted to experience. Everyone else who still feels unfulfilled, and this is about 99% of the population, needs to get true clarity about what they want to experience. Only real clarity is power.

Many people talk only about things, about the objects they want in their lives, like a beautiful house but in fact, what really makes people happy is the experience of living in that beautiful house.

Let me give you an example – I love sailing and have always dreamt of having a really sleek sailing yacht but I never bought one. First because I did not have the money and later because I did not really want the responsibility that goes with maintaining a boat. Still the yearning remained until I realized I want the feeling of absolute peace and oneness with nature that signifies sailing for me and I don’t need to own a yacht to have this experience. I can charter one whenever and wherever I feel like it. It is the experience of being on the sea listening to the water glide past and the sound of the sails that turns me on, that gives me this sensation of utter peace – not the yacht itself.

The strange thing is that if you focus on the object only, like the yacht or the dream home, you are actually limiting yourself because the strongest manifestation is through emotion, is through sensation, through the experience itself. The object is just the vehicle.

Unfortunately most people think the vehicle is what they want and therefore manifest that but what we really want is the feeling, the experience of peace, freedom, and joy. If we concentrate on that, we find that we are able to get these emotions in a variety of ways, and may have but don’t need to have the object itself to feel the satisfaction. If I had no money I could work on a yacht to get that feeling, couldn’t I?

Ask yourself what it is you really want? What do you want to experience in your life and then think of ways how to achieve that.

Happy experience,
Barbara
