Find our why our conscious often wants different things to our subconscious. Considering that our subconscious controls about 95% of our thoughts, what part of us do you think wins?

Will Power is Scarce

Will power is scarce. It really is.
Please, read this article careful as it might be the most important fact you  learn at this time of year when most of us set New Year Resolutions.

According to a fascinating experiment published in the “Journal of Personality and Social Psychology”, one act of self-control depletes your ability to have self-control in another unrelated area. For example, when someone was told not to eat chocolates sitting right in front of them, their
persistence in puzzle solving went down considerably. Allow this to soak in; just staying away from chocolate hurts your performance in all other tasks!

A similar experiment simply asked people to suppress an emotional reaction to a movie. These people had problems solving a solvable anagram while the group who watched the movie without restrictions solved it without problems.

Both studies show that when we are asked to consciously use our “will power” we struggle in all other areas. Actually, we are really only able to use our will power (conscious self regulation) on one thing at a time. So if you are multi-tasking don’t be surprised if not all tasks are finished with the same excellence. If you focus your attention on some other act of self control… You can kiss whatever you were doing goodbye.

This is the overwhelming reason why willpower only works in the short term. You only have the conscious resources to exhibit willpower on ONE (or at the most two) fronts at one time.
This is why it is so hard to stay disciplined with healthy eating habits and exercise for instance.

Resource” Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, vol. 74, 1998.

Your conscious mind is only able to process approximately 50 bits of information a second, while your unconscious mind processes approximately 1,2 million bits per second.

That means your unconscious mind processes information THOUSANDS OF TIMES FASTER than your conscious mind.
Much of the time, your conscious mind is actually the bottleneck towards effecting true change, as its main role is getting you through the day in the here and now AND setting long term goals. Researchers call this “Executive Control.”

So the trick is to train your subconscious mind to think better, more positive and supportive thoughts. Wouldn’t it be nice if you naturally were propelled forward, towards living your dreams without having to use willpower?

Wouldn’t it be nice if you automatically had the behaviors you have always wanted to have; the behaviors that you need to actually get you where you want to go?

Well, strange as it seems, all you need to do is learn to use even a small part of your subconscious by starting to allow only supportive thoughts into your consciousness. As in all else the choice is yours. I share several techniques with you in my book “To be or not to be – the choice is YOURS!”

Anchor Your “Ideal Day”

I want to follow up on what I wrote about a few days ago. The creation of your “ideal day”. Did you do it?

If you passed on that opportunity I wonder if you really want change in your life? Remember what I wrote a couple of days ago?

Sometimes the short pain of effort feels stronger than

the long pain of failure.

Don’t let this delusion catch you. As Einstein said so eloquently: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.”

If you want different results than the ones you have right now, get up and move in a different direction. Move into the direction of your dreams, of what you consider a “perfect” life. In the long run it is easier than staying in an uncomfortable, dissatisfying situation.

Take the opportunity to write your personal vision of your ideal day now! And if you have already done it last week then make it more detailed, more colorful, more descriptive, more real…

When you feel excitement and warmth and a big smile is creeping into your face, that is when you are actually start seeing yourself in that ideal situation and as you come to the peak of that feeling, anchor it with a gesture and a sound. As you see, hear, smell, taste and feel what it will be like to live in that ideal situation, anchor this feeling, this vision of your ideal life with a gesture and a sound so you can get it back at any time.

Read your vision at least once daily and think about it as often as possible so your subconscious starts to take it for real and helps you create it.

IT TRULY IS IN YOUR HANDS TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!

You are not who you think you are

One of my favorite quotes of all times is from Mark Victor Hansen. He says:

“You are not who you think you are but what you think you are.”

What does that mean?

I means that we see  our self in certain ways but that is not necessarily what the outside sees. For instance, I consider myself pretty hard working while my family thinks I am quite lazy because I don’t have a regular job. For them I am either traveling – which to an employed person means either a vacation or a paid trip for the company – or I am at home not doing anything that is apparent to them. Different perceptions and therefore different outcomes.

The same happens within us. We have a conscious perception of ourself and a subconscious one. The conscious one is what we want to see or what we struggle with constantly (because of our belief system). The subconscious is our belief system. All the things we belief we are and can or can’t do and this creates our re-action to situations and things – automatically.

These are things that were educated into us when we were children and they might have been correct then but today as adults we are different. We can do different things in many different ways, still we tend to react automatically and often repeat the same pattern over and over again, i.e. fall for the wrong partner, make bad investment decisions etc. It is because of a core value we hold or a belief that was formed in our early years. We have talked about that before and you can find in depth information how to improve your values and beliefs in the TO BE book www.thetobebook.com

What Mark Victor Hansen talks about is that our perception of who we are is not reality but with what we think we create our reality. I will talk more about  that giving you example tomorrow.

Positive Habits Are Learnable Goals – Bob Garvey

It surprises a lot of people to learn that 95% of all thought is at the subconscious level. This is a good thing. Do you know what you would do if your subconscious decided to take the day off?

Chances are that you would lie in bed all day long staring at those little dangly things at the end of your feet. Sometime in the evening, you would proudly exclaim, “Ohhhh! I remember! Those are my toes!” and then it would be time for bed.

Your subconscious being in charge is a good thing! Everything you and I have ever learned is stored in the subconscious. For this reason, one of the most powerful goal setting strategies you can use is to make your goals learnable, repeating them over and over again.

Learnable goals enable you to gain new skills and insights and eventually store them in your subconscious, making them a habit.

By definition, anything that you do without much conscious thought, ie. subconsciously, is a habit. Learnable goals help create positive habits. If you want to become healthier, set a learnable goal of walking for 20 minutes each and every day.

If you want to become more organized, set a learnable goal of 30 minutes of planning each day. As you do these activities, they will get easier and easier, eventually using only a fraction of the energy initially required.

The more positive habits you build, the quicker and easier you move toward your overall goals!

Yours on Purpose,

Bob Garvey

From Goal Setting to Goal Achieving

I always say that you can only go as far as your confidence let’s you. Apart from the obvious what do I mean with that?

In the film the Secret it is said that the Law of Attractions works as follows: ask – believe – receive. Which part of these 3 steps do you think is our biggest challenge? The believe part of course.

We normally have no problem asking and when we get what we want, we also have no problem receiving but we do have a big issue with believing. And it is here where we also have our challenges when we set goals.

So let’s look at some scientific facts to help understand the reason why so few of us reach the goals we have set for ourselves. Scientists found that only 2-4 % of what we do actually comes from our conscious mind. This is where our willpower and persistence originates from. But 96-98 % of what we think and do comes from our non-conscious. Most people do not achieve their goals because their 2-4% willpower and persistence against an overwhelming 96-98% is just not strong enough. We are driven by our non-conscious mind or as it is called in neuroscience our implicit memory system.

Let me explain. Our implicit memories are locked in our subconscious. They consist of memories necessary to perform events and tasks, or to produce a specific type of response or emotion. Driving a car becomes an implicit memory once it has become automated but these implicit memories cannot be looked up or remembered so we cannot use them for conscious actions or reasoning.
That is why the “believe” part of the Law of Attraction is so omni-important. As soon as we truly believe that we can achieve/be/have whatever it is we desire, the emotion, this feeling of ‘knowing’ that it will happen, will actually help us make it happen. It activates the 96 – 98 % non-consciousness to act in our favor. And when that happens we become truly unstoppable!

So instead of beating yourself up when you do not reach your goals find the WHY you want to reach it. Find the true reasons, the ones that get you exited and your blood boiling and focus on that. If you believe you can achieve – you will! If your why is strong enough, the how becomes easy.

Happy achieving!
