Integrating new and better habits can be very difficult because we are all much too busy. Time seems to be racing and there is always so much to do – so much still unfinished. No time really to concentrate on what we want or need to change.
The only way we can get on top of that is by prioritizing. Some things are more important than others. Some are more urgent than others. Doing the “balancing act” in your everyday life requires careful and thoughtful planning of how to spend your time and energy if you don’t want to burn yourself out.
Let’s look at what priorities are:
1. Our priorities are based on what we value (achievement, integrity, intimacy, personal satisfaction, independence, etc.) and what our goals are (establishing/maintaining a career, raising a family, finding/maintaining a committed relationship or friendship, etc.)
2. Because each of us is a unique individual with our own values and goals, it is normal that our priorities will be somewhat different from those of other people around us. And they may conflict with the priorities of those close to us. For that reason it is very important to understand what our own priorities are before we decide to adjust them to those around us.
3. As our life changes, so do our priorities. The important thing is to stay aware what our priorities are at all times because it is so easy to get lost in “busy work” instead of spending our days doing what really needs to get done. You are the one who decides when and why activity X is more important than activity Z.
Always remember, you are the ultimate decision-maker in your life. Even when you compromise, you make a decision – the decision to compromise.
To be or not to be – the Choice is truly Yours!
