"To Get More, You Have to Become More" - Master Coach Barbara Hofmeister

The great business philosopher Jim Rohn always said: “To get more, you have to become more.”

That is probably the reason why the Million Dollar Lotto winners are usually broke again after a few years. They have not become “more” first. Let’s make sure that this does not happen to you.

Have you heard of the Westerner that goes to a monastery in Tibet and asks the monk there how he can become more. The monk says nothing but pours him a cup of tea. However, when the cup is full he keeps pouring and soon there is tea all over the small table.  The Westerner calls out to stop. The monk looks at him, then points to the flooded table and says: “This was your first lesson. You Westerners cram your life so full that your cup constantly overflows and still, you ask for more.”

So, first things first, and that is to create space and time freedom in your busy life so you can actually grow and become more. Yeah, yeah, I know. You want it NOW but unfortunately that is not how it works. You will get it when your foundation is solid and that foundation is to create the space for the MORE you desire.

Obviously, if you are one of the few who actually is super organized and does not keep anything that is not needed, congratulations! You don’t need to do today’s exercise. I personally love to keep stuff and need to de-clutter on a regular basis and by now, I know how it is done 🙂

Clutter are all the things you do not really need but keep, for later reference or sentimental reasons. My weak spot are piles of documents and notebooks and books that I want to go through when I have time (do we ever?) and it piles up fast.  It piles up on my desk, my kitchen table, my sofa corner, sometimes even my bedside table and every few weeks I sift through the piles and organize myself again.

For my closet I get help from my niece once or twice a year. She is very pragmatic and after all, it’s not her stuff, so there is no attachment and quite often we find something she likes for herself 🙂

At the end of the day, not only are my closets spacey, but we are both happy and I have a pile of lovely things I can give to those less fortunate. Win-win all around.

What feels or looks cluttered in your environment – Your garage, your home, your workspace, your drawers, your closets, your car, maybe even your life? Start clearing it out.

You probably do not want to do it all at once. Do it one small step at the time and while doing it ask yourself:

  • How often have I used this in the last year?
  • When has this last brought me joy?
  • Does this bring me joy now?

If you have not used it for a while and it does not really bring you joy, get rid of it. Sell it or donate it but make sure it leaves your space.

Once done, you are not only going to feel really proud of yourself but you will actually physically feel the difference. It’s a very powerful exercise!

En-JOY!
